The International Gorilla Conservation Programme strongly condemns the attack in Rumangabo, DRC, on April 24, 2020, resulting in the tragic loss of life of civilians as well as employees and rangers of Virunga National Park.
Virunga National Park, Africa’s first national park, continues to overcome incredible challenges in the preservation of wildlife while supporting livelihoods and stimulating economic development. It is a testament to the resiliency and dedication of men and women who work for the park and who live along its boundaries.
As noted in the statement released by Virunga National Park, “more than ever, those communities aspire to live in a climate of stability, justice and peace.”
